Wembley to Increase Security for England’s Euro Qualifier Following Brussels Attack
England’s Euro Qualifier with Italy on Tuesday will have increased security measures in place at Wembley Stadium, according to Sky Sports News. The decision comes after two Swedish nationals were killed in the terror attack in Brussels.
The attack occurred during Belgium’s Euro 2024 Qualifier against Sweden, causing the match to be abandoned at half-time. Fans were kept inside the stadium while armed officers searched for the attacker.
The suspected gunman has since died after being shot by armed officers and taken to the hospital, according to Belgian police.
Belgium has raised its terror alert to the highest level in response to the incident, and authorities cannot rule out the presence of further accomplices.
The Metropolitan Police assures fans attending Tuesday’s game of a “robust policing plan” and a highly visible police presence. Superintendent Gerry Parker, the match commander, states that measures are in place to prevent crime and disorder and respond promptly to any emerging incidents.
In anticipation of increased security, the Football Association (FA) will have more police officers and FA security officials on duty at Wembley. This comes after the FA was criticized for not lighting the Wembley arch in support of the Israeli victims of Hamas in the Middle East. Instead, England wore black armbands and observed a minute of silence in their match against Australia on Friday.
A moment of silence will be observed before all Euro 2024 qualifier matches on Tuesday in memory of the two victims of the Brussels attack. This incident follows the recent murder of a teacher in France, making it the second terrorist attack in Europe in four days.
