The 2023 Ohio High School Athletic Association Golf Season Ends with Highs and Lows for Cincinnati Area Athletes
The 2023 Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) golf season came to a close at the Ohio State University golf course, leaving Cincinnati area athletes with mixed emotions. While the tournament didn’t end with a bang, several individuals stood out and achieved personal milestones.
Lakota East Senior, Clare Yeazell, Ends High School Career on a Bittersweet Note
Under a dreary sky and with a slow drizzle, Lakota East senior Clare Yeazell reflected on her final high school golf outing. “Today I started off really strong. I felt good about it, but the pressure got to me a bit,” she said.
Yeazell, the Southwest district champion, had a chance at first place after day one, with a score of 72, just five strokes behind the leader. However, a tough second day pushed her down to seventh place, finishing ten strokes back. Despite this, Yeazell’s combined total of 146 strokes earned her a spot in the top 10 and second-team All-Ohio honors.
Now that her high school career has ended, Yeazell looks forward to playing golf at the University of Indianapolis, leaving high school in the past and focusing on her future.
Elder Junior, Cayse Morgan, Makes Impressive State Tournament Appearance
Cayse Morgan, an Elder junior, had high hopes for the state tournament as he made his second appearance in the competition. Although he didn’t win, Morgan felt proud of his performance, stating, “I had the chance to compete and, yeah, I mean, I didn’t win, but I had a good chance.”
Morgan finished third overall, with a combined score of 142, which would have been enough for first place in previous years. He remained focused on his achievements and is eager to take on the state tournament once again in his senior year, aiming to win the title.
Springboro Team Struggles, but Gavin Augenstein Excels Individually
The Springboro team qualified for the state tournament but had a disappointing weekend, finishing eighth overall. However, senior Gavin Augenstein stood out individually, tying for fifth place with a combined score of 145. Augenstein’s impressive performance, with six birdies over two days, earned him first-team All-Ohio honors.
