Eddie Howe not interested in replacing Gareth Southgate as England manager

Eddie Howe has no interest in becoming the next England manager, despite being included on the Football Association’s shortlist of potential candidates to replace Gareth Southgate.

Howe, who has achieved considerable success at both Bournemouth and Newcastle United, is viewed as the top English candidate for the national team. However, he has made it clear that he intends to remain at Newcastle and is not ready to transition into international management.

Gareth Southgate’s contract with the FA will expire after the European Championship next year, possibly leading to his departure in 2025. While the England job is appealing to Howe, he wants to continue facing the day-to-day challenges of club management.

If Southgate does step down, the other potential English candidates to replace him are Nottingham Forest manager Steve Cooper and former Brighton and Chelsea coach Graham Potter. However, it is believed that Potter would also prefer a return to club management rather than wait for the England job.

Newcastle’s hierarchy would resist any attempt by the FA to recruit Howe, as he is contracted until at least 2026. The relationship between Howe and the board is strong, and there have even been discussions about extending his contract further.

In September, Telegraph Sport reported that Howe is not under pressure to replicate last season’s top-four finish. Instead, the focus is on sustainable growth and stability with Howe leading the team.

Newcastle to Search for New Midfielder in January

Eddie Howe’s job has become more challenging due to the anticipated loss of summer signing Sandro Tonali, who faces a lengthy ban for breaching betting rules during his time at AC Milan. Tonali’s absence will likely lead Newcastle to sign another central midfielder in the January transfer window. Loan deals are preferred, with Newcastle considering the possibility of borrowing Ruben Neves from Al-Hilal. Manchester City’s Kalvin Phillips and Manchester United’s Scott McTominay were also previously of interest.
