Liverpool Squad Absent Luis Diaz in Premier League Clash with Nottingham Forest
In a Premier League clash with Nottingham Forest, Liverpool’s Diogo Jota paid tribute to his teammate, Luis Diaz, who was absent from the squad.
Diaz was not involved in the match due to concerning developments in his native Colombia.
On Saturday night, Diaz’s parents were kidnapped in the town of Barrancas. Although his mother has been rescued, his father is still missing.
An hour before kickoff, Liverpool announced Diaz’s absence for their 10th league game of the season. Jota started in his place.
Jota opened the scoring in the 31st minute at Anfield and delivered an emotionally charged tribute to Diaz.
After scoring, Jota celebrated by running towards the Liverpool dugout and holding up Diaz’s No. 7 shirt, surrounded by his teammates in a poignant celebration.
Before the match, Klopp explained the decision to grant Diaz compassionate leave and expressed his concern for the player and his family after a “really tough night.”
“Due to the private situation involving Luis Diaz, we had to make a late change,” Klopp told BBC Sport.
“It’s a worrying situation for all of us, and it was a challenging night.
“I have never experienced anything like this before. It’s a new, unwanted experience for me.”
Darwin Nunez extended Liverpool’s lead to 2-0 before halftime at Anfield. The Reds dominated the game, enjoying 74 percent possession.
