Different Opinions Among NASCAR Cup Drivers on Playoff Format

NASCAR saw a significant shift in 2004 when it narrowed championship eligibility to the top 10 drivers. More drastically, the elimination process was introduced in 2014, booting playoff drivers through three rounds to leave just four drivers competing for the title in the final race. Despite discontent from devoted fans, NASCAR’s season-long system of the past has been replaced with the more intense and suspenseful Playoff format to determine the champion.

The previous point system, used for 30 years, was heavily criticized for rewarding consistency over victory. Notably flawed, runners-up often received the same points as the race winner if they led the most laps—making winning a race rather inconsequential. Subsequently, the system sometimes resulted in champions being determined before the final race, leading to a loss of drama in the championship.

The newly implemented points-based Playoff format has given the final 10 weeks of the season new vigor and excitement, although not without opposition from fans attached to the older system. Some drivers—who raced under the older system—value rewarding season-long consistency, while others opt for using the results of the final three races to determine a champion. However, this idea has been met with skepticism from fans who prefer the current emphasis on only the final race.

Former champion Kyle Larson admitted that the current system may not always produce the best champion, a view echoed by retired driver Kevin Harvick. Harvick acknowledged an excess focus on one race, seeing potential in spreading the playoff system across more races. Other drivers such as Stenhouse Jr. recognize the excitement brought by the knockout-style format despite their preference for the old system. Ultimately, fan entertainment often outweighs tradition, leading drivers to support the playoffs from an entertainment perspective—even if they prefer the older system.

Driver Michael McDowell expressed a preference for the season-long point system, however, he conceded that the current format provides more excitement, benefiting fans, television ratings, and sponsors. The debate among drivers and fans over determining the championship signals that the push for excitement and fairness is an ongoing battle.
