The UConn women’s basketball team’s dominance 20 years ago was symbolized by Geno Auriemma’s bold statement, “We’ve got Diana and you don’t.” During that time, the Huskies were on the path to securing their second of three consecutive national titles from 2002-04, with legendary player Diana Taurasi leading the charge in the backcourt.
Fast forward to present day, Taurasi’s impact on the WNBA remains resolute. The 41-year-old confirmed her decision to continue playing for the Phoenix Mercury in 2024, underlining her dedication to the sport.
Reassuring fans and the league, Taurasi emphasized, “I got another year of my contract, and I’m definitely going to fulfill that.”
Earlier this year, Taurasi signed a two-year deal with the Mercury, ensuring her presence in the WNBA through 2024. Her unwavering commitment to Phoenix is evident, having spent her entire WNBA career with the team. This season, Taurasi achieved a significant milestone, becoming the first player in league history to surpass 10,000 career points. Since 2017, she has held the WNBA all-time scoring record.
Despite missing several games due to injury, Taurasi’s determination is unwavering. The Phoenix Mercury endured a challenging season, finishing last in the league standings and missing the playoffs after almost a decade. However, Taurasi’s teammate, Brittney Griner, has also committed to returning to the Mercury, expressing her unwavering loyalty to the team amidst personal and professional adversities.
Griner, who returned to the court following a tumultuous period in Russia, reaffirmed her connection to Phoenix, stating, “Phoenix is home.”
Looking ahead, both Taurasi and Griner remain focused on their future with the Mercury, eager to overcome the setbacks of the past season.
