One of the most talked about stories this week you might have missed is former Dallas Cowboys star receiver Dez Bryant criticizing ESPN’s Malika Andrews for what Bryant claims is a double standard in criticizing Black NBA players vs. white ones.
While this story may seem petty and frivolous, it highlights how individuals can be attacked, in this case, Andrews, with no factual basis for doing so in today’s media environment.
On the other hand, this story also sheds light on how women in sports, especially Black women, are subject to harsh treatment from fans and others, being held to impossible and unfair standards in sports journalism overall.
Moreover, Bryant’s assertion that Black athletes are held to different standards than their white counterparts takes the discussion to a higher plane, despite it originating from a lower one.
Despite Bryant’s misguided approach in confronting Andrews, his message about double standards remains significant. Bryant claims to have witnessed these double standards firsthand.
For months, Andrews has faced criticism from NBA fans due to the misguided belief that she is more critical of Black coaches and players than white ones. It is important to note that there is no evidence to support this claim; it’s simply untrue.
Furthermore, much of the criticism she receives stems from her gender, with some men disliking aggressive coverage and opinions from women.
For instance, Bryant and others point to her questioning of Alabama’s Brandon Miller in the June draft, which led to unwarranted attacks against her online for simply doing her job.
There were similar incidents after the Celtics suspended former coach Ime Udoka. Andrews had a heated discussion with Stephen A. Smith about it, which resulted in further online attacks against her.
Recently, Andrews was accused of failing to address an alleged issue involving Oklahoma City star Josh Giddey with the same fervor she did with other Black players. However, law enforcement and the NBA are currently investigating the matter, and there is no further information to report at this time.
Bryant’s larger point about double standards is an issue that extends far beyond this situation and should not be overlooked. The treatment of many Black Americans in various aspects of life reflects a similar double standard that needs to be addressed.
Ultimately, the main takeaway from this entire situation should be the need to address and rectify these double standards that persist in society.
