The San Jose Sharks secured their first road win of the season by defeating the Devils 6-3 on Friday night. Jacob MacDonald and Anthony Duclair both scored twice, and Kaapo Kahkonen made 44 saves in the game.
Mikael Granlund notched a goal and two assists while William Eklund also scored for San Jose. Despite being the league’s worst team, the Sharks improved their overall record to 6-16-2 with this victory.
Dawson Mercer, Jack Hughes, and Ondrej Palat scored for New Jersey, but it wasn’t enough to keep their three-game winning streak alive. Simon Nemec recorded two assists for the Devils in his NHL debut, and Akira Schmid made 12 saves in the losing effort.
MacDonald opened the scoring early in the game, and despite New Jersey tying it up on the power play, MacDonald quickly put the Sharks back ahead. Duclair extended San Jose’s lead, and despite Hughes bringing the Devils within one, Duclair scored again to secure the victory for the Sharks.
Former Shark Timo Meier returned to the game after missing seven games with a lower-body injury, and it marked the return of goalie Mackenzie Blackwood, defenseman Nikita Okhotiuk, and forward Fabian Zetterlund to New Jersey, all of whom were part of last season’s trade that brought Meier to New Jersey. The Devils also recalled defenseman Nemec to replace the injured Dougie Hamilton.
The Sharks will next face the Rangers on Sunday, while the Devils will take on the Canucks on Tuesday to start a four-game road trip.
