Detroit Red Wings’ stumbles after ‘great start’ a needed lesson in discipline

Newark, N.J. — The Detroit Red Wings had a mix of optimism and disappointment following their season opener. They started the game strongly against one of the top teams in the Eastern Conference, but ultimately fell short against the New Jersey Devils in a 4-3 loss on Thursday at Prudential Center. This game showed both positive and negative aspects for the Red Wings.

“It was a good hockey game,” said Wings captain Dylan Larkin. “It was an emotional game. The Devils are a strong team. We had a great start, and if we can consistently play like that, we’ll be in a good position. The main issue was that we didn’t take full advantage of our scoring chances, especially in the first period. But I’m not concerned about that. We have plenty of goal scorers on our team.”

THIRD-YEAR TAKEOFF? Red Wings’ Lucas Raymond appears poised for breakout season. Here’s why

Newcomers Alex DeBrincat and Daniel Sprong made significant contributions with goals, alongside Robby Fabbri. However, goalie Ville Husso could have read a shot from Jack Hughes better, leading to the Devils’ first goal. Husso ended the game with 23 saves. On the other side, Vitek Vanecek, the Devils’ goalie, made 32 saves, including 14 in the first period.

“It was a great start,” commented Husso. “We had some good chances in the first period where we could have scored two or three goals. Although the Devils gained momentum in the second period, the game remained close. What matters most is turning these games into wins. We are still learning, and we need to focus on the positives.”

The Red Wings’ next game will be their home opener against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday. Despite the frustration of leaving New Jersey without any points, the team is determined to analyze their performance and acknowledge the positive aspects.

“I loved our start, and I also liked our third period,” said coach Derek Lalonde. “However, our second period got away from us due to turnovers that fueled the Devils’ momentum. The penalties we took were also a major setback. We had too many penalties, especially slashing and hooking calls that we could have managed better. We need to address that issue.”

Two veterans, Jeff Petry and David Perron, were each penalized twice. Petry was called for holding, while Perron was guilty of slashing. Giving skilled teams like the Devils nearly eight minutes of power play time severely hindered the Red Wings’ chances of winning.
