Denver Broncos secured a dramatic 24-22 victory over the Buffalo Bills with Will Lutz’s retaken last-gasp field goal.
The kicker’s initial attempt drifted right, however, the Bills were penalized for having too many men on the field, allowing Lutz to secure the win with a successful 36-yard kick as time expired.
With less than two minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, Josh Allen’s touchdown had put Buffalo ahead 22-21.
As a result of the defeat, the Bills are currently outside the AFC play-off places with a 5-5 record. This marks the second consecutive defeat for the Bills, who were considered pre-season Super Bowl favorites. Additionally, it’s their first home loss in exactly a year. Meanwhile, the Broncos, with their third consecutive victory, move to a 4-5 record.
Lutz’s game-winning field goal was the final act of a closely fought game in which neither offense consistently performed at their best.
Denver initially edged into a 9-0 lead after a Lutz field goal and a Courtland Sutton touchdown early in the second quarter. Buffalo responded when Allen found Dalton Kincaid for a 22-yard touchdown.
Lutz’s kicking prowess helped the Broncos to a 15-8 halftime lead before Latavius Murray’s touchdown brought the Bills level.
Another touchdown from Javonte Williams and Allen’s effort in the fourth quarter set the stage for the late drama, with the Broncos capitalizing on their final drive after an interference penalty given against Bills cornerback Taron Johnson and the home team having 12 men on the field for Lutz’s first field goal attempt.
