GREENCASTLE – Saturday night was a moment of redemption for Rocky Li and the Carmel boys tennis team. After a disappointing loss in last year’s team regional competition, Li was determined to lead his team to victory against undefeated and top-ranked Carmel. The tension was palpable as Li’s match result would determine the outcome of the IHSAA boys tennis team state championship at DePauw University.

Li, despite nursing a wrist injury, never faltered. With match point in sight, he delivered a powerful forehand followed by a masterful backhand. The intense showdown between Columbus North’s senior duo and Li’s unwavering determination had the crowd on edge. Finally, Shah’s attempt to keep their match alive fell short, and Carmel emerged victorious with a 3-2 win.

“Last year, I was the one who lost the final point to Harrison, which ended our tournament run. Winning this year and being the last point means a lot to me,” reflected Li.

This victory was a moment of redemption for Carmel. After losing their title in 2022 and watching rival North Central clinch their 21^st championship, the Greyhounds were determined to regain their position at the top. Coach Dan Burnette, who had previously led North Central to three consecutive boys team titles, brought his expertise to Carmel and guided them to their 15^th state title.

Despite facing numerous delays and challenges due to weather conditions, Carmel’s resilience shone through. They dominated their way to the finals, where they sealed their victory against Columbus North. Each member of the team contributed to their impressive 27-0 record and the ultimate triumph that they had worked tirelessly for.
