Former Chicago Cubs manager David Ross was let go earlier this month with one year left on his contract, and it is reported he is taking his time to decide on his next move.
Ken Rosenthal and Brendan Kuty of The Athletic reported that Ross was offered a role as the New York Yankees’ bench coach immediately following his dismissal, but declined, as he would prefer a managerial position.
Rosenthal explained further during his “Foul Territory” podcast, and mentioned that it doesn’t seem likely for Ross to land a managerial role this offseason, implying that he may sit out the year or become an assistant to collect his 2024 salary.
With the New York Yankees in need of a new bench coach after Carlos Mendoza joined the Mets, there are currently just two managerial vacancies in MLB – with the Brewers and Padres still on the lookout for skippers.
The Milwaukee Brewers are seeking to fill the role vacated by Craig Counsell, who replaced Ross as the Cubs’ manager recently, while the San Diego Padres are also yet to formally hire a replacement for Bob Melvin.
A managerial shift in the Houston Astros and Cleveland Guardians organizations has already occurred, but there are still gaps to be filled in the MLB’s coaching ranks.
