Davante Adams wants more targets: That’s my purpose for being here

Despite securing consecutive wins, star receiver Davante Adams of the Raiders expressed his frustration.

During the victories against the Packers and Patriots, Adams was targeted only nine times, resulting in six catches for 74 yards.

“Some people might question why there is an issue since we won the game,” stated Adams on Wednesday, as reported by Mark Anderson of the Associated Press. “As a player like myself, my focus isn’t solely on wins and losses, but rather on greatness. When I step onto the field, I expect to showcase my abilities and have a significant impact on the game. That’s the purpose of my presence.”

“I joined this team with the intention of winning and doing things the right way. If things don’t align with that vision, it’s only natural for me to feel frustrated if I’m not part of the plan.”

During the 2022 offseason, the Raiders traded valuable draft picks to acquire Adams from the Packers. Additionally, they signed him to a substantial five-year, $141.25 million contract. Adams had an impressive performance last season, with 100 receptions for 1,516 yards and 14 touchdowns. This marked the fourth time in the past five seasons that he achieved these impressive figures.

While Adams is on track to replicate his success this season, a significant portion of his production, consisting of 20 targets, 13 receptions, 172 yards, and two touchdowns, occurred in a single game.

The Raiders have only managed to accumulate a total of 38 points in their last two games, averaging a mere 16.7 points per game.

“Even if Jakobi [Meyers] were to have an exceptional game or if the offense were to score every five plays…it is what it is,” explained Adams. “This isn’t about me, but I do play a significant role in the success of our offense.”

Adams clarified that he is not assigning blame to Josh McDaniels or the coaching staff. Instead, he simply desires more opportunities from the quarterbacks.

“I’m not oblivious,” Adams emphasized. “It’s challenging for the quarterback to consistently target someone who constantly faces double coverage.”

Due to a back injury, Jimmy Garoppolo did not participate in Wednesday’s practice. If Garoppolo is unable to play against Chicago this weekend, rookie quarterback Aidan O’Connell may make his second start of the season.
