Dallas Open upgraded to an ATP 500 tournament for 2025 – NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth

Dallas has firmly established itself as a major sports city, which has resulted in the professional tennis community giving more attention to the Dallas Open tournament. What began only two years ago as an annual tennis pro event is now set to be upgraded to an ATP Tour 500 level tournament, effective from 2025. This upgrade will elevate the Dallas Open’s status and also provide more opportunities within the professional tennis circuit, offering increased ATP ranking points and bigger prize money to attract top players and more competitive participants.

The initiative to elevate the Dallas Open was led by GF Sports & Entertainment, with plans to relocate it to a new venue soon to be announced. This move comes as no surprise given the city’s illustrious history of hosting major sporting events such as All-Star Games and Super Bowls, and its designation as a host city for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Retired tennis legend and Dallas resident, John Isner, played an instrumental role in convincing the tournament to relocate from New York to North Texas in 2022. Isner expressed his belief in the tournament’s sustained growth in Dallas, stating that “the track record for sports in Dallas shows the city has the potential to grow in yet another sport.”

The upgrade of the Dallas Open, along with tournaments in Doha, Qatar, and Munich, Germany, to ATP 500 status will collectively contribute approximately $51.7 million in additional player compensation over five years. These upgrades will expand the ATP 500 category from 13 to 16 tournaments across the season, replacing ATP 250 tournaments in Atlanta, Lyon, and Newport.

The upcoming Dallas Open in 2024 will be held from Feb. 3 through Feb. 11 at Southern Methodist University. While the location for the 2025 tournament has yet to be announced, the organizers are expected to reveal more details soon, according to the ATP.
