The Chicago Cubs have made it Official. After four seasons, manager David Ross has been fired and former Milwaukee Brewers manager Craig Counsell has been hired as the new skipper.

The reports first emerged on Monday afternoon and the Cubs later confirmed the departure of Ross through a press release on the same day.

“Today, we have made the difficult decision to dismiss David Ross as our Major League manager,” stated Cubs President of Baseball Operations, Jed Hoyer. “On behalf of the Cubs organization, we express our deep gratitude for David’s contributions to our club, both on and off the field.”

According to the Cubs, Counsell will be officially introduced to the media at Wrigley Field next week.

Counsell had been the manager of the Brewers for parts of nine seasons, guiding them to five playoff appearances and an appearance in the National League Championship Series in 2018.

Widely regarded as one of the top managers in baseball, Counsell’s contract expired in early November. The Cubs quickly made a move and reportedly signed him to the most lucrative deal in MLB history.

Ross, who concluded his playing career by winning a World Series championship with the Cubs in 2016, took over as manager after the team chose not to re-sign Joe Maddon following the 2019 season.

In his tenure of four seasons, Ross achieved a record of 262-284 and led the Cubs to a National League Central division title in 2020. He also guided the team to an 83-79 record in the 2023 campaign.
