Conor McGregor ‘had a lot of wisdom’ for UFC hopeful

Paul Hughes was left feeling “inspired” after his meeting with Conor McGregor before his Cage Warriors lightweight fight with Jan Quaeyhaegens in Dublin on Saturday.

Hughes, a 26-year-old fighter, is moving up to the lightweight class after winning the Cage Warriors featherweight title last November.

McGregor, who is a two-weight world champion in both Cage Warriors and the UFC, is a source of motivation for Hughes as he aims to reach the same heights.

“Meeting McGregor was a truly enlightening experience,” said Hughes, who hails from county Derry. “It felt surreal, but his wisdom and advice were invaluable. He left me feeling inspired.”

McGregor urged Hughes to enjoy his journey and appreciate every moment, emphasizing how quickly time passes. Hughes has taken this advice to heart and intends to approach his career with that mindset.

Although Hughes had previously been on the brink of joining the UFC, injuries and visa problems delayed his transition to the premier MMA class.

By staying active and competing in front of his hometown crowd against Quaeyhaegens, Hughes hopes to improve his chances of achieving his ultimate goal.

Hughes boasts an impressive record with nine victories in his ten professional fights. His title win over Vucenic in November came after a controversial loss against the English fighter two years earlier.

“This Saturday night’s fight is crucial for me. I’m up against a strong opponent, and it’s undoubtedly the most significant bout of my career,” stated Hughes.

“The MMA community has been eagerly anticipating my entry into the UFC. I firmly believe that’s where I belong, and I’m determined to conquer this obstacle on Saturday. Once I do, I’ll assess the available options.”

“We had a few opportunities to join the UFC in the past, but unfortunately, they didn’t materialize. Nevertheless, we’re on the verge of success and making great progress.”

“Securing a spot in the UFC is my top priority. If the chance for two belts arises, and the UFC doesn’t come calling, then that’s the path I’ll take.”

“I aspire to become a two-weight world champion. If I can’t achieve it in Cage Warriors, then I aim to accomplish it in the UFC. It’s been a decade since my first MMA fight, so reaching the UFC around that anniversary would be truly special.”
