Common Thread: Three NASCAR Championship Contenders Graduates Of Toyota Driver Development Program

By Jerry Jordan, Editor

AVONDALE, AZ – Corey Heim, John Hunter Nemechek, and Christopher Bell share more than just their speed and pursuit of a NASCAR championship. All three have achieved their current status through Toyota’s Driver Development Program.

The TD2 program, as it is called, nurtures young racers under the Toyota umbrella. It offers them training, tips, and lifestyle guidance to enhance their performance. This includes strength training, mental health support, advice on managing heat inside a racecar, and nutritional guidance.

David Wilson, President of Toyota Racing Development, believes that this training will benefit the Toyota drivers on the track.

“There is a common denominator that connects all three Toyota championship contenders,” said David Wilson. “Corey Heim, John Hunter Nemechek, and Christopher Bell are all Toyota development drivers. They have all progressed through our development system, and this is something we are celebrating this year. It’s an achievement we are extremely proud of.”

The impact of the TD2 program is evident in Heim’s performance at the Craftsman Truck Series Championship in Phoenix Raceway. He has reached out to other TD2 alumni, including Bell and Nemechek, seeking advice on dealing with the pressures of racing for a championship.

“Having people around at the Toyota Performance Center, like John Hunter (Nemechek) and Christopher Bell, has been invaluable,” Heim said. “They have championship experience and I’ve been able to learn from them. They understand the mental side of racing, which is challenging for someone in their first full-time year. But every day, I’m learning more and more.”

Heim has no doubts that Toyota has provided him with the best opportunities, which is why he is a championship contender.

“Every year with Toyota Racing, they have positioned me for success,” Heim affirmed. “Since joining the program, I’ve been successful. When I return to the Truck Series next year, I expect the same support. And when I’m ready to move up, Toyota will move me up.”

“I spend a lot of time on the simulator, but I also like to watch previous races and analyze strategies that worked and didn’t work,” Heim added. “I’ve had the opportunity to talk to other drivers at the Toyota Performance Center, like John Hunter (Nemechek) and Christopher Bell. They have shared their experiences as previous Championship 4 participants and provided guidance on mental preparation for the race.”

Bell credits the TD2 program for the influx of young racers in the Toyota program. By instilling the right principles in young drivers, the competition and success levels have improved.

“Now you see young guys with a few years of experience, and that’s why we’re here today,” said Bell.

Nemechek echoed these sentiments, acknowledging the support he has received from Toyota both on and off the track.

“I won’t mention names, but there are definitely some ‘goats’ (Greatest Of All Time) in all series that I’ve reached out to. They’ve provided me with different perspectives and mindsets,” Nemechek revealed.
