The Columbus Academy and Upper Arlington girls tennis teams achieved second place finishes in their respective divisions at the Ohio Tennis Coaches Association state tournament held in Wooster on Saturday.
Academy’s Division II team fell short to Cincinnati Indian Hill with a score of 0-3 at Aspen Racquet Club. Meanwhile, Upper Arlington lost to Mason with the same score in the Division I final. This loss denied the Golden Bears their chance of winning their first title since 2013 as Mason continued its streak and secured their seventh consecutive championship.
Division II
The Columbus Academy Vikings (19-2), who were hoping to win their first team championship since 2008, emerged victorious with a 3-0 sweep against Toledo Ottawa Hills in the semifinals. However, they faced a tough opponent in Indian Hill, who dominated every match and did not drop a set, ultimately defeating Academy.
Academy’s Gabby Stewart lost to Martha Thompson 6-0, 6-1 at second singles, Malia Chow fell to Caroline Brown 6-0, 6-1 at third singles, and Grace Philip and Sophie Wu lost to Lexi Larsen and McKenzie Stoddard 6-3, 6-1 at second doubles.
In the semifinal, Academy’s Tamanna Arya shut out Ella Shetterly 6-0, 6-0 at second singles, Yasemin Bilgin defeated Aggie Yoon 6-0, 6-1 at third singles, and Arya Chabria and Gabby Stewart beat Caroline Durfee and Bryn Tangeman 6-2, 6-2 at first doubles.
Bilgin and Chabria also won the doubles title in the OHSAA individual tournament held on Friday at Aspen.
The OTCA matches were initially played at the College of Wooster but were moved indoors due to rain.
Division I
Similar to Academy, Upper Arlington (16-3) dominated their semifinal match against Whitehouse Anthony Wayne but couldn’t replicate the same success in the final.
Against Mason, Isabella Roth lost to Addison Cassidy 6-2, 6-0 at first singles, Lili Bibbo lost to Ayumi Kashikwakura 6-0, 6-1 at third singles, and Caroline Kegg and Ava Kramer fell to Pratyusha Chaudhuri and Chloe Zhang 6-0, 6-2 at first doubles.
In the semifinal, Alexa Roth shut out Kaiying Buskirk 6-0, 6-0 at second singles, Bibbo beat Savanna Saneholtz 6-0, 6-1 at third singles, and the first-doubles team of Danielle Ball and Alice Hawley swept Cara Langenderfer and Emily Szul 6-2, 6-2.
