On Thursday, the Kansas City Chiefs made the decision to waive their sixth-round rookie defensive tackle and their kick returner.
According to the NFL transactions report, the former Kansas City Chiefs defensive tackle Keondre Coburn, a sixth-round draft pick from Texas in 2023, has been claimed on waivers by the Denver Broncos.
Coburn, who also served as a kick returner for the Chiefs, was waived along with wide receiver Montrell Washington. This move was made in order to make room on the roster for wide receiver Mecole Hardman, who was acquired in a trade with the New York Jets on Wednesday, and defensive end Charles Omenihu, who recently completed a six-game NFL suspension.
During a press conference on Thursday, defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo expressed his desire for the team to bring back Coburn to the practice squad. Unfortunately, due to the recent waiver, this is now impossible. However, there is a possibility that Denver may waive Coburn in a few weeks or not sign him to a reserve/future contract at the end of the season. For now, the Chiefs have lost the opportunity to develop this young player.
On the bright side, Washington has cleared waivers and is now a free agent. Special teams coordinator Dave Toub expressed his hope that the team would be able to add Washington to their practice squad. According to a report from esteemed journalist Matt Derrick of Chiefs Digest, Kansas City has successfully achieved this goal. Washington will claim the final spot on the practice unit’s roster.
