Rumor: Chase Young linked to Bears for a trade

According to a report by
Mike Florio,
there are rumors of a potential trade that would link Chase Young to the Bears.

Florio’s report suggests that acquiring Young would be a strategic move for the Bears in the long run. With Young set to become a free agent after this season, the team would need to offer a substantial contract to secure his services.

The Bears are projected to have the most cap space in the league during the upcoming offseason, making it feasible for them to take on Young’s long-term contract if they choose to do so. According to Spotrac, the Bears are estimated to have around $96 million in cap space.

While Florio believes it is more likely that the Commanders will trade Montez Sweat, another edge rusher, at the trade deadline, he suggests that the Bears would greatly benefit from a trade for Young, as it would significantly improve their defensive line.

In the previous season, the Bears had the fewest sacks in the NFL, recording only 20 sacks. This season, they currently have the second-fewest sacks in the league with 10. The lack of pressure on opposing quarterbacks has negatively affected the Bears’ defense, who are allowing an average of 26.9 points per game, ranking 28th in the league.

Despite a knee injury in 2021, Young, who was the 2020 winner of the NFL’s Defensive Rookie of the Year Award, has shown remarkable progress this season. In six games, he has already accumulated five sacks and 14 tackles, six of which resulted in a loss of yardage. If the Bears were to acquire Young, their defense would see a significant improvement, providing more opportunities for Yannick Ngakoue on the opposite side.

With the trade deadline approaching on Tuesday, the question remains whether Ryan Poles and the Bears can pull off a blockbuster trade to secure the services of the Commanders’ star edge rusher.
