The Chargers and Ravens are closing out the day’s action on Sunday Night Football. Catch up with The Athletic’s NFL experts and insiders, Jeff Zrebiec, Daniel Popper and The Athletic NFL Staff.
On their opening drive, the Chargers took a 3-0 lead by kicking a field goal, marking the ninth time in 11 games they have scored first, tied for most in the NFL. The score remained through the first quarter, marking the first time in 12 games this season that the Ravens had trailed in the first period.
The Ravens secured a 7-3 lead in the second quarter with a 3-yard TD pass from Lamar Jackson to rookie WR Zay Flowers. Jackson connected with five different receivers in the first two drives. The Chargers, who entered the game with only eight turnovers this season, fumbled twice and threw a half-ending interception in their final three possessions of the first half. The fumble led to a Ravens field goal, and Baltimore has scored 64 points off turnovers this season, the fourth most in the NFL. The Ravens led 10-3 at halftime.
In the third quarter, Jackson topped the 5,000-yard rushing mark in his career. The Chargers ended the third quarter trailing 13-3 and having gained just 183 total yards, their second fewest through three quarters in a game this season. The Chargers have caused a multi-turnover game, with seven turnovers in four games. The Ravens defense kept the pressure on, leading to a strip-sack and recovery, ultimately resulting in a 13-3 lead with under 13 minutes to go.
The Chargers continued to struggle offensively, with just 183 total yards through the third quarter and the hopes of a score being thwarted by turnovers. Justin Tucker extended the Ravens’ lead with a second field goal, making the score 13-3.
Both teams are vying for the win as the Chargers hope to overcome their turnovers, having failed to score a touchdown in the first half, which marked the end of their 48-game streak with a first-half touchdown, previously an NFL record.
