Perry’s Stock Watch: Chad Ryland hits new low in loss to Giants originally appeared on NBC Sports Boston
The New England Patriots have had an exceptional kicker for the majority of Bill Belichick’s 24-year tenure as head coach. However, it seems like those days are now in the past.
New England chose to let go of veteran Nick Folk this offseason and invested a 2023 fourth-round draft pick on Chad Ryland. Unfortunately, this decision hasn’t worked out. Ryland’s missed 35-yard field goal cost the Patriots a close game against the New York Giants at MetLife Stadium, sealing their 10-7 loss to the lowly team.
Ryland’s performance this season has been disappointing, with only a 66.7 percent success rate on field goal attempts, ranking him second-to-last in the NFL. His inconsistent play has even drawn criticism from Bill Belichick himself.
Belichick’s lack of faith in Ryland was evident when he chose to punt instead of attempting a 54-yard field goal with Ryland on New York’s 37-yard line in the first quarter.
Heading into Week 12, Ryland earned a “Stock Down” label in Phil Perry’s “Stock Watch” report. The Patriots’ struggles with their kicking game, especially after years of success with elite kickers, are a cause for concern.
