When it comes to NBA nicknames, they tend to have an elusive and organic origin, making it difficult to trace their exact beginning. This holds true for the Boston Celtics’ reserve big man, Luke Kornet, and his widely popular “Green Kornet” nickname, as reported by Luke Scotchie of Boston Dot Com.
When asked about the superhero-inspired nickname’s origins, Kornet confessed that he remains uncertain about how it came about. “The Green Kornet, that just sort of happened when I got traded,” explained the Vanderbilt alum. “I honestly don’t even know (where the appellation came from).”
Kornet suspects that the nickname was potentially created by Celtics analyst and former player Brian Scalabrine, drawing inspiration from the superhero character “Green Hornet.” He also acknowledged that the nickname is not commonly used within the organization but remains prevalent in the media and on social platforms.
Amidst Kornet’s on-court success during the 2023-24 season, the “Green Kornet” moniker is once again gaining traction, especially on Twitter.
