Cayla George has made WNBL history by becoming the all-time leader in rebounds, a remarkable feat despite the Sydney Flames’ 82-66 loss to the Bendigo Spirit in Round 4. George, a recent WNBA champion with the Las Vegas Aces, grabbed eight rebounds in the first quarter alone and had a total of 13 along with 14 points in the game.
This outstanding performance marked George’s 3230th rebound, surpassing three-time Olympian Rachael Sporn as the league’s most prolific player in this category since its formation in 1981. Additionally, the reigning WNBL MVP is currently ranked fifth in rebounds for the season, averaging 8.6 per game from four starts.
The Spirit’s 28-9 third quarter secured their first victory of the season, with Alicia Froling and Casey Samuels each contributing 17 points and seven rebounds off the bench. Meanwhile, Opals captain Tess Madgen made her Flames club debut, finishing with five rebounds and seven points.
Elsewhere, the Melbourne Boomers secured a 6-point overtime victory against the last-placed Canberra Capitals. Keely Froling’s lay-up tied the game, and the Boomers sealed their 87-81 win with a late 5-1 run. Additionally, American recruit Naz Hillmon’s 33 points and 13 boards led the Boomers to their undefeated 5-0 record.
In other matchups, the Perth Lynx faced back-to-back losses, while the Southside Flyers and Townsville Fire secured victories, further shaking up the standings for the season.
