Carl Junction earns spot in Class 4 District 7 championship

On November 4th, the Carl Junction Bulldogs showcased their exceptional defensive skills once again in the Class 4 District 7 semifinal match against Harrisonville. The Bulldogs emerged victorious with a final score of 17-7, allowing only seven points in their two postseason games.

“Defensively, we were outstanding once more,” expressed CJ head coach Todd Hafner. “We gave up just seven points against a formidable football team. And to top it off, we caused turnovers.”

The game kicked off with a 35-yard touchdown as Dexter Merrell threw a pass to Ryder Pyles, putting the Bulldogs in an early lead. However, Harrisonville responded with their own score, equalizing the game.

Right before halftime, Carl Junction orchestrated a remarkable drive that concluded with a 2-yard rushing touchdown from running back Marcus Lopez-Durman, putting them ahead at 14-7.

Gavin Cowger sealed the victory with a 39-yard field goal, extending the Bulldogs’ lead. Coach Hafner commended Cowger, saying, “He’s been exceptional throughout the year, and he nailed the field goal to give us a two-score advantage.”

CJ’s defense exhibited dominance, shutting down any further offense from the Wildcats.

“What an incredible evening,” rejoiced Hafner. “Our players gave it their all, and it was an incredibly enjoyable experience.”

The Bulldogs have triumphed over two postseason opponents who had more wins than them during the regular season, outscoring them 49-7.

“What truly excites me for our players is seeing their smiles,” Hafner shared. “They put in effort and dedication every week, fulfilling all our expectations consistently.”

In the upcoming district championship, CJ will face Nevada (8-2). Nevada dominated Grandview with a staggering 43-0 victory on Friday. Their only losses this season were against Lamar (14-0) and Seneca (40-36).

“Nevada is an exceptional football team,” acknowledged Hafner. “We know they bring physicality to the game. It will be a hard-fought and physically demanding matchup.”
