Brohm and Stoops: Football Pedigree with Different Styles
Jeff Brohm and Mark Stoops share a football pedigree but in different ways. Brohm, a second-generation quarterback for Louisville, comes from a family with a rich history at the university. His brothers Brian and Greg are former Cardinals and now part of the coaching staff.
On the other hand, the Stoops family is more defensively minded. The Stoops family patriarch, Ron, has a long history as a high school defensive coordinator. Mark Stoops and his brothers, Bob and Mike, all have a background as defensive backs at Iowa.
Kentucky head coach Mark Stoops will go up against Louisville coach Jeff Brohm for the first time in the Governor’s Cup. The game will take place at noon on Saturday at L&N Stadium.
Brohm remarked about Stoops, “He’s a really good football coach. He’s a good person. He’s been able to build up the Kentucky brand and program. He’s a football guy, comes from a football family, so I have a lot of respect for that. And, I think he wants to win. He surrounds himself with some good coaches on his staff.”
Stoops also praised Brohm, saying, “Although the two aren’t ‘great friends,’ I’ve known Brohm since the latter coached at Western Kentucky and have a lot of respect for Louisville’s first-year coach.”
While Brohm aims to bring the Governor’s Cup back to Louisville, Stoops said he “desperately” wants to keep the trophy in Lexington.
The 2023 Governor’s Cup will take place at L&N Stadium. U of L QB Jack Plummer recently received the ACC Quarterback of the Week honor, while UK RB Ray Davis needs 10 rushing yards to reach 1,000 for the season.
Additionally, Louisville DC Ron English is a semifinalist for the Broyles Award, given to college football’s top assistant coach.
In the odds provided by DraftKings, Louisville is a 7 ½-point home favorite over Kentucky.
The game will be broadcast on ABC, and qualified subscribers can stream it on espn.com/watch. This is an important game for both teams, so it’s bound to be an exciting matchup between two rivals in college football.
