Australian golfer Cameron Percy unleashed his skills at the World Wide Technology Championship in Los Cabos, Mexico, shooting a remarkable 10-under-par 62 in the first round to claim the lead. With an incredible display of precision and finesse, Percy managed to sink an eagle pitch shot on the par-5 sixth hole and accumulate eight birdies, securing his lead without a single bogey. Notably, this tournament at El Cardonal at Diamante is the first ever PGA Tour event to be hosted at a course designed by Tiger Woods himself.

The 49-year-old Percy currently holds the lead by two strokes, edging out contenders Michael Kim, Nate Lashley, and Colombia’s Camilo Villegas. Reflecting on his flawless performance, Percy humbly remarked, “I hit the ball beautifully. Didn’t hit it quite close enough coming in, but I had a few looks. I couldn’t make ’em all.”

Being nearly eligible for the PGA Tour Champions, Percy plans to participate in the Champions Tour’s Q-School next month. His astounding performance in this tournament, even if only for one day, will undoubtedly boost his confidence as he competes against younger players.

Villegas, the 41-year-old Colombian golfer, also impressed in the tournament’s opening rounds, matching Kim’s score of 8-under par 64 during the morning wave. Villegas achieved this by delivering eight birdies and ultimately pulling even with Kim after a birdie on his 17th hole. Known as a four-time winner on the PGA Tour, Villegas has recently embarked on his announcing career but has not neglected his game. With the guidance of new instructor Jose Campra, he demonstrated his prowess on the golf course and expressed his satisfaction with shooting a low score, stating, “It’s always nice to see a low score.”

Meanwhile, Kim, a 30-year-old golfer, projects that the winning score by the end of the tournament will fall into the 20s range under par. Recognizing the importance of accuracy and skill, he comments, “It’s definitely a second-shot golf course. You can use a lot of bowls to your advantage if you hit it in the right spots. You know, you need some good iron swings.”

The veteran presence continued with Matt Kuchar, aged 45, who also displayed his prowess by scoring an impressive 7-under 65. Tied with him is Cameron Young, the highest-ranked player in the competition at No. 17, among other skilled contenders.

Additionally, Sahith Theegala showcased his abilities in his final official event of the year, opening with a commendable 2-under 70. Michael Block, known as a teaching pro who finished 15th at the PGA Championship, secured an even-par 72 in his first round. Maverick McNealy, returning from a shoulder injury that has kept him sidelined since June, scored a 2-over 74.
