Cameron Norrie pulls out of Paris Masters but expected to be fit for Davis Cup Finals

Cameron Norrie hits a return at the Paris Masters

Cameron Norrie made an impressive start to the 2023 season but has won only four of his 15 matches since Wimbledon

British number one Cameron Norrie has withdrawn from the upcoming Paris Masters due to a knee injury. However, the 28-year-old is expected to recover in time for the Davis Cup Finals.

Currently ranked 18th in the world, Norrie sought treatment for his knee issue during his recent match against Alexander Zverev in Vienna. This adds to Great Britain’s fitness concerns, as Dan Evans also suffered a calf injury at the same event.

Great Britain will face Serbia, led by Novak Djokovic, in the quarter-finals on November 23. Despite a string of poor performances, Norrie remains the leading men’s player for the nation and has been chosen by British captain Leon Smith as part of the five-man squad that reached the Davis Cup Final Eight, alongside Andy Murray.

Norrie’s withdrawal from the Paris Masters, which is the final Masters tournament of the ATP Tour season, is believed to be a precautionary measure. It is expected that he will be fit enough to compete alongside his teammates in Malaga.

On the other hand, the chances of Dan Evans playing in the Davis Cup are uncertain. Evans was leading 4-1 against Frances Tiafoe in the first round of the Vienna tournament when he suffered a potentially serious calf injury and was unable to continue.

The extent of Evans’ injury will become clearer in the upcoming days. However, his performances were crucial in securing Britain’s spot in the Malaga event, as he won important matches in both singles and doubles during the squad’s victories against Australia, Switzerland, and France last month.

If Evans is unable to participate in the Davis Cup, it is likely that a doubles player will be called up to partner with Norrie, Murray, Jack Draper, and Neal Skupski. Joe Salisbury or Jamie Murray are the leading candidates for this role.

Evans has been playing doubles with Wimbledon champion Skupski, forming the preferred doubles team of Captain Smith. Their partnership proved vital as they saved four match points before winning a nerve-wracking decider against France.before winning a nerve-wracking decider against France.
