BYU midfielder Bella Folino (22) celebrated her goal against USC with teammates Olivia Katoa (10) and Allie Fryer (23) during the second round of the NCAA championship in Provo on Thursday, Nov. 16, 2023. The victory secured a 1-0 win for BYU.

The No. 1-seed Cougars advanced to their third-straight NCAA Sweet 16 with the help of a goal from senior Bella Folino and another shutout performance. BYU head coach Jennifer Rockwood praised the capabilities of USC, noting their strong defense throughout the first half. Following halftime adjustments, the Cougars successfully found a way to break through the defensive line.

In the 58th minute, senior Kendell Petersen initiated the scoring sequence, setting up Folino for her seventh goal of the season. Folino’s decisive shot from eight yards out secured the victory for the Cougars.

Despite the lead, USC applied pressure in the latter part of the game. BYU freshman goalkeeper Lynette Hernaez made two crucial saves to maintain the lead. Aaliyah Farmer’s shot, which skimmed the crossbar, almost forced a tie, but BYU successfully defended.

With their ninth advancement to the NCAA Tournament third round, BYU looks forward to facing No. 5-seed Michigan State. The upcoming match is set for Saturday at 6 p.m. MST at South Field.
