In one frosty 44-degree evening, the BYU women’s soccer team sought revenge against Utah State for their only loss of the regular season. Kendall Petersen and Olivia Wade-Katoa each scored a goal contributing to the top-seeded Cougars’ 2-0 win in front of a standing-room-only crowd at South Field, amidst biting temperatures.
The Cougars came into the game with a 13-2-1 lead in the all-time series. However, the Aggies were unbeaten against the Cougars under head coach Manny Martins, boasting a 2-0-1 record in the last three games, including a win earlier in the season with a score of 1-0.
“I think we definitely came into this game with a chip on our shoulder,” Wade-Katoa said. “It’s something we’ve been working on all week long, getting up for those game and knowing what they were going to show us. Everyone was super focused and locked in on what they needed to do tonight.”
The Cougars high spirits were evident as Jamie Shepherd set up Petersen for the first goal in just the 10th minute of the game, establishing a 1-0 lead. The game continued with relentless pursuit, and Wade-Katoa doubled the advantage in the 73rd minute, securing the win for BYU.
After their victory, Coach Martins expressed his belief in the team’s resilience, acknowledging that “You’re not going to win every game, especially against great teams.” With that, the Cougars advanced to host USC in the next weekend’s second round following the Trojans’ 1-0 win over Grand Canyon.
