BYU is set to make its 12th consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance and its 36th overall. The team finished third in its first season in the Big 12, continuing a trend of top-tier finishes under Coach Olmstead’s leadership. Throughout Olmstead’s nine seasons, the Cougars have consistently placed in the top three of their league, securing trips to the Tournament and consistently advancing to at least the second round.
In 2021, BYU hosted the opening weekend of the NCAA Tournament after a hiatus during the covid-affected 2020-21 postseason. Notably, last season marked the first time in the Olmstead era that the Cougars did not host the first and second Rounds.
Senior outside hitter Erin Livingson expressed enthusiasm about playing at home in the Smith Fieldhouse, highlighting the incredible fan support and electric atmosphere. The Cougars are grateful for the opportunity to host Weber State and are looking forward to the matchup, anticipating a high-energy game to kick off the Tournament.
Having finished the regular season ranked No. 16 in the nation by the AVCA poll, BYU also boasts impressive rankings in specific statistical categories. The team ranks No. 22 in blocks per set (2.63), No. 24 in team hitting percentage (.275), and No. 33 in opponent hitting percentage (.170).
Teams that emerge victorious from the upcoming matches will proceed to regional play on Dec. 7 and 9, with regional winners vying for a spot in the national semifinals and ultimately, the national championship on Dec. 14 and 17 at Amalie Arena in Tampa, Florida. The championship match will be broadcast on ABC.
