The Chicago Bulls have had a disappointing start to the season, leading to concerns about their offensive strategies, the fit of their “Big 3” players, and their future as a team.

From the failure to utilize Nikola Vucevic’s favorable matchup in the first game, resulting in a heated exchange between Vucevic and coach Billy Donovan, to DeMar DeRozan relying on hero ball to secure the lone victory, and Zach LaVine’s impressive performance of 51 points in a loss to the Detroit Pistons, the team’s core has struggled to establish collective chemistry.

LaVine expressed frustration, mentioning the positive impact Lonzo Ball had when he was on the team: “Obviously we’re all frustrated on why it’s not clicking the way it should be… It looked really good when Lonzo was here… We’re going to have to figure it out… We all love each other… We have to figure out how to make this thing work.”

The players are aware of the potential consequences if they fail to improve. LaVine acknowledged the business aspect of the NBA, stating, “We’ve been here for long enough… We understand the business… You understand what’s on the other side of that.”

In interviews during the offseason and preseason, Vucevic emphasized that the team’s core could be broken up if they don’t find success this season. Additionally, DeRozan’s contract situation adds uncertainty, as he is set to become an unrestricted free agent after this season.

The Bulls’ shift to a more cohesive offense with less isolation has been a challenge. Donovan’s desire for off-ball actions and player movement has yet to fully materialize, resulting in a clunky halfcourt offense. LaVine mentioned the need for better recognition of matchups and improved involvement of all players: “It can’t be a 50-point game from me or a 20-point fourth quarter from DeMar every game… We need everybody else. But it has to work like a well-oiled machine.”

The Bulls are committed to figuring things out, but if changes aren’t made, further adjustments may be necessary. For now, the team is focused on staying the course and improving their performance.
