When Myles Garrett swung a helmet at an opponent, he received an indefinite suspension and had to embark on an apology tour before being allowed to return the following season.
Jake Camarda, the punter for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, managed to escape any penalty when he seemingly swung his helmet at an opponent. In fact, the officials decided to disregard the incident entirely.
In the midst of a standard NFL game, the Buffalo Bills and Buccaneers found themselves engaged in a minor skirmish following a field-goal attempt. However, things took an unusual turn when Camarda made contact with Bills defensive lineman Greg Rousseau using his helmet.
During a push from linebacker Terrel Bernard, Camarda’s helmet came off, and in his attempt to regain control of it, he inadvertently struck Rousseau’s helmet.
“Oh, there’s a helmet swing there,” commented analyst Kirk Herbstreit on Amazon Prime Video.
Camarda could argue that his helmet was already coming off, and he did not intentionally swing it at anyone. Instead, he was merely trying to secure it as he was being pushed, and the contact with Rousseau’s head was unintentional. Feel free to review the replay and make your own judgement.
Regardless, no penalty was assessed. In fact, the officials even retracted a flag that had been thrown and did not issue any penalties for the altercation.
While it may not have been as severe as the infamous incident involving Myles Garrett in 2019, when he forcibly removed Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Mason Rudolph’s helmet and struck him with it, the NFL will likely review the replay in the coming days.
