Brandon Aubrey seeks to break NFL kicking record

Brandon Aubrey’s NFL career began inauspiciously when he missed an extra point only 6:57 into his first game. It was not the ideal start for the Cowboys, especially after their previous kicker had set a playoff record with four missed extra points in January.

However, Aubrey has since redeemed himself and is now aiming for a different kind of NFL record.

Since his first PAT attempt, the rookie kicker has not missed, making 18 consecutive field goals to start his career. This ties Browns kicker Travis Coons, who also made 18 consecutive field goals in his first season back in 2015.

“To be honest, I haven’t really focused on that record,” stated Aubrey in an interview with Garrett Podell of CBS Sports. “I’ve done it so far, and I hope to continue this streak in the future. My main focus is just going out there and executing my kicks.”

Aubrey is not your typical NFL rookie.

Instead of playing college football, he spent his time as a defender on the soccer team at Notre Dame. During his tenure, he scored a total of 15 goals in 76 games. In 2017, Aubrey was selected by Toronto FC in the first round.

In 2022, Aubrey decided to transition from soccer to football. He became the top kicker for the Birmingham Stallions in the USFL, making 14 of 15 field goals and 35 PATs as they went on to win the league championship in 2023.

“I don’t really feel like a rookie,” Aubrey expressed. “Having played in the USFL for a couple of years, I feel more like a sophomore. Although I understand that it’s not the same as the NFL, as a kicker, the fundamentals remain similar. I was more prepared this time around compared to my rookie year in the MLS. I knew what to expect and I was ready to embrace the responsibilities of being a professional athlete.”

Aubrey has provided stability to the Cowboys’ kicking position, which had gone through Brett Maher, Kai Forbath, and Greg Zuerlein following Pro Bowler Dan Bailey’s departure as the franchise’s all-time leader in made field goals (186).
