EA Sports is finally honoring the most requested hockey legend, Bobby Orr, by adding him to the NHL 24 series. For all NHL 24 players who log in before Jan. 2, 2024, Orr is now a free playable character as part of the Boston Bruins Alumni Team with an impressive overall rating of 97, alongside Wayne Gretzky and Mario Lemieux.
This addition marks Orr’s debut in an EA Sports game and potentially his first appearance in a hockey video game, except for being the subject of a Bally pinball machine called “Bobby Orr Power Play” in 1978, where he was depicted as a Chicago Blackhawks player despite playing only 26 games with that franchise in his last two NHL seasons.
Inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1979, Orr had a stellar career with the Bruins, helping them win two Stanley Cup championships in 1970 and 1972 and subsequently winning numerous accolades such as the Norris Trophy for the league’s top defenseman eight times and the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP in both Cup-winning seasons.
NHL 24 also has an indirect connection to Orr through Colorado Avalanche defenseman Cale Makar, who, according to Wayne Gretzky, has similarities to Orr.
In Makar’s words, “Those are crazy comments. To be compared to a guy like that is crazy,” as he expressed his humility and respect for the legendary Orr.
