Blackhawks’ Kevin Korchinski scores unusual first NHL goal: ‘I’ll take it’ originally appeared on NBC Sports Chicago
TAMPA BAY — Chicago Blackhawks rookie defenseman Kevin Korchinski notched his first NHL goal on Thursday in an unforeseen manner.
During the closing minutes of the initial period, the Blackhawks secured an offensive zone faceoff. MacKenzie Entwistle emerged victorious, Ryan Donato grabbed the puck, and then dished it to Korchinski, who directed it towards the net, aiming for a pass to Entwistle.
However, the puck deflected off Tampa Bay Lightning defenseman Darren Raddysh’s skate and found its way into the back of the net.
“I was aiming for Twisty’s stick and saw him backdoor, and it hit something,” Korchinski stated. “I didn’t know if it hit that or a skate or something. But I was just happy it went in the net originally.”
Entwistle promptly acknowledged Korchinski’s achievement, intuitively realizing that he didn’t make contact with the puck, acknowledging the 19-year-old defenseman’s debut goal in the NHL. It’s safe to say that Korchinski didn’t envision it happening this way.
“Yeah, obviously, took a lucky bounce, but I’ll take it,” Korchinski remarked following an impressive 5-3 win. “First goal, special moment. Obviously it’s cool having my mom here to see it. Just kind of adds to it. It’s good that we got the win, too, makes it more special.”
It’s apt that Korchinski’s mom witnessed the event during the Blackhawks’ Moms trip. Because that puck surely won’t remain in Chicago for long once they return from the trip.
“I’m not going to take it because I’ll probably lose it,” Korchinski joked. “So I’ll give it to her to bring back home for safe-keeping.”
