Bexley’s Amiya Bowles, Columbus Academy doubles team win OHSAA girls tennis state titles

Bexley’s Amiya Bowles defeated Cincinnati Indian Hill’s Martha Thompson 6-1, 6-2 on Friday at Aspen Racquet Club in Wooster to capture her second consecutive Division II state singles title.

In a thrilling victory, Amiya Bowles from Bexley emerged triumphant, securing her second consecutive Division II state singles title. The competition took place at Aspen Racquet Club in Wooster, where Bowles defeated Cincinnati Indian Hill’s Martha Thompson with a score of 6-1, 6-2. Bowles experienced a wave of celebration and relief as she fell to the court, cherishing the moment as if it were her first victory.

Despite similarities to last year’s win, Bowles revealed that the feeling remains unchanged. She stated, “I said it last year, but it’s really relieving and (a feeling) of, ‘Wow.’ People might think the feeling is more neutral, but it definitely feels the same.”

Bowles now joins an elite group of two-time singles champions in Ohio’s high school tennis history, becoming the 21st player to achieve this feat and the 11th in any division. She follows in the footsteps of Bexley’s Jane Cohodes, who achieved this honor in 1980 and 1982.

In a contrasting match, seniors Yasemin Bilgin and Arya Chabria from Columbus Academy secured the Division II doubles championship after a hard-fought battle. They emerged victorious with a score of 7-6 (7-6), 4-6, 7-5 against Kate Mills and Summer Mu from Shaker Heights Hathaway Brown. This win provides another championship for central Ohio.

Bowles demonstrated her dominance throughout the final match, only briefly falling behind at 2-1 in the second set. With this triumph, Bowles concludes the season with an unblemished record of 19-0 and an impressive overall record of 40-0 over the past two years.
