Bedard ready for 1st matchup against Matthews, Maple Leafs in Toronto

Bedard is thrilled with Matthews’ praise of his shots and the opportunity to play in Toronto, which he considers a major platform for the sport. It’s amazing,” said the 18-year-old when informed of Matthews’ kind words. “I feel like he’s revolutionized this particular shot. And with six goals in two games, he’s definitely doing something right.

“Ever since he joined the League, he’s been someone I admire and look up to. I love watching him play and how he approaches the game. Everyone knows about his shot, but his overall game is what’s special. His defensive skills and all-around presence on the ice are often overlooked because of his scoring abilities.

“He’s undeniably one of the best in the League, so I’m excited to compete against him.”

Bedard has the chance to make history himself. According to NHL Stats, if he records a point in his fourth NHL game, he’ll be the first Blackhawks player since Jonathan Toews in 2007-08 to achieve this feat. The last No. 1 overall pick with any team to accomplish this was Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin in 2005-06.

In Matthews’ opinion, Bedard’s accomplishments are even more impressive given the grueling schedule Chicago has faced to start the season. They’ve played road games against Crosby and the Penguins, Brad Marchand and the Boston Bruins, and a Saturday Hockey Night in Canada match against the Montreal Canadiens. Chicago will wrap up the schedule against Matthews and the Maple Leafs, followed by a game against Nathan MacKinnon and the Colorado Avalanche on Thursday.

“They really threw him into the fire here,” said Matthews, himself a former No. 1 overall pick. “It’s a lot, but at the end of the day, you just want to play hockey. That’s what matters most.

“Being with the guys and enjoying playing in the NHL is every kid’s dream.”

Bedard couldn’t agree more.

“There’s been a lot of media attention, but I’m just focused on playing hockey,” he said. “And I’ve truly enjoyed the whole experience. It’s been fantastic.”

Playing against Maple Leafs rookie forward Fraser Minten will also be a great opportunity for Bedard. The two played minor hockey together in Vancouver and even lived together in Toronto for a few weeks this past summer.

“He texted me congratulations when I made the team, which was really cool,” said Minten. “It’s nice. We grew up together, and he played a big role in my success. I improved a lot by playing with him for a couple of years. Watching his work ethic was motivating. He helped me develop as a player, and I’m grateful for his friendship right now.

“There was already a buzz around him in Vancouver when he was just 11 or 12. He played against older kids and dominated. You never knew how good he was on a global scale, but locally, he was definitely the best player.”

Any advice for containing Bedard?

“Give him as little room as possible because if you give him space, he’ll make you pay. So, keeping the puck away from him is crucial.”

So far, the opposition has struggled to do that effectively.

At least they haven’t been successful enough to keep him from scoring.
