Beaumont’s beloved public servant, Allison Nathan Getz, passed away on October 10 after battling brain cancer for nearly two years. Her husband, Mike Getz, a member of the Beaumont City Council, is proposing to rename the Beaumont Municipal Tennis Center in her honor.
In a heartfelt post on social media, Mike reflected on Allison’s lifelong passion for tennis, which began in her childhood and continued into her adult life. She served on the board of the Southeast Texas Tennis Association and was instrumental in expanding the Tennis Center in partnership with the city of Beaumont.
As a certified tennis tournament director for the annual Beaumont Labor Day Tennis Tournament, Allison made significant contributions to the tennis community. She was also recognized for her leadership and service on the United States Tennis Association – Texas Section’s Executive Committee from 2012 until 2019.
In addition to her work in the tennis community, Allison held various leadership roles in 16 local organizations throughout her lifetime. She also served as the Jefferson County Tax Assessor-Collector from 2014 until her passing.
Mike Getz has requested that the Beaumont City Council consider changing the name of the Tennis Center to the “Allison Getz Municipal Tennis Center.” The proposal will be discussed at the upcoming City Council meeting, as the council recently approved an official naming policy for city facilities.
According to the new policy, proposed names must recognize individuals who have made significant contributions to the community, volunteered for many years, and positively impacted the lives of the city’s residents. The council will also evaluate the financial and public safety implications of the name change, with a public hearing expected to take place before any vote.
The Beaumont City Council meeting is scheduled to take place at City Hall, 801 Main St. at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
