Javier Mendez is uncertain about the potential fight between Conor McGregor and Islam Makhachev in terms of its suitability for Makhachev’s career.
The lightweight champion, Makhachev (25-1 MMA, 14-1 UFC), recently delivered a head kick knockout of Alexander Volkanovski at UFC 294 last month and is now preparing for his next title defense in early 2024.
Makhachev’s teammate, Daniel Cormier, has suggested a fight against McGregor (22-6 MMA, 10-4 UFC), claiming it “makes all the sense in the world.” However, Mendez believes that a fight with McGregor would not significantly contribute to Makhachev’s legacy.
In an interview with Red Corner MMA, Mendez stated, “I see that as a fight that would be interesting for Islam because he gets to do what Khabib (Nurmagomedov) didn’t finish, I guess you could say. It’s a great payday for Islam. I think it’s great if Islam wants it.”
“If he doesn’t, then maybe going after the welterweight title is more appealing to him – to create the kind of legacy he desires, because beating Conor is not going to fulfill the legacy that Islam seeks. Going after the welterweight title, now, that’s a legacy-defining moment. With Conor, it’s more about money and hype, so I don’t know his thoughts on that. It’s never been brought up,” Mendez added.
McGregor, who is expected to face Michael Chandler, is coming off two consecutive losses and hasn’t competed since breaking his leg in a TKO loss to Dustin Poirier in July 2021. Mendez doesn’t believe McGregor deserves a title shot upon his return, but he acknowledges that MMA typically prioritizes entertainment over a traditional sporting approach.
“From a real sport perspective, no, he needs to show that he’s worthy. But from an entertainment aspect, yes, because he’s still the biggest name right now,” Mendez explained.
