Bears fire David Walker over workplace behavior, source confirms

LAKE FOREST, Ill. — The Chicago Bears announced the termination of running backs coach David Walker, citing his problematic behavior in the workplace. This decision was made by coach Matt Eberflus due to Walker’s previous reprimands from the team’s human resources department and a subsequent occurrence that led to his firing.

“As the head coach, we have set standards for our staff and organization both on and off the field, and unfortunately, those standards were not met,” stated Eberflus.

Eberflus expressed his disappointment regarding Walker’s dismissal, emphasizing the team’s commitment to upholding their standards. He clarified that the decision was made collectively with the support of general manager Ryan Poles, president/CEO Kevin Warren, and team ownership.

This marks the second departure of a Bears assistant coach this season, following former defensive coordinator Alan Williams’ resignation in September for personal health reasons. While the HR department was also involved in Williams’ departure, it is unrelated to Walker’s firing.

Despite the recent coaching changes and off-field issues, Eberflus reiterated that the Bears do not have a culture problem, emphasizing the strong relationship among team members and their dedication to turning the season around.

When discussing the “standard” repeatedly referenced, Eberflus pointed to the guidelines he established upon being hired, including respect, punctuality, and hard work. He also clarified that Walker’s behavior did not raise any red flags during the hiring process.

In light of Walker’s departure, Bears assistant coach Omar Young, who specializes in working with wide receivers and quarterbacks, will take over coaching duties for the running backs.
