In Melbourne, the WNBA is abuzz with the outstanding performances of Jordin Canada, whose free agent price tag is soaring with each elite moment she delivers as the guard for the Melbourne Boomers.
Just three games into her stint with the Boomers, the two-time WNBA champion has electrified the WNBL, positioning herself as the early favorite for MVP with the undefeated Boomers.
While WNBA clubs are unable to negotiate with players until January’s free agency, Canada’s impressive season with the LA Sparks, where she ranked sixth league-wide with an average of six assists per game, has surely caught the attention of potential suitors.
When asked about her plans, Canada stated, “I’m going to explore my options and make the right decision when the time comes. Be recruited by teams, see what that looks like (and) just trying to be present and be focused here with the Boomers and then, in January, balance both.”
Part of the allure of Melbourne for Canada was the chance to expand her playing style off the ball, with Opal Kristy Wallace taking on the playmaking role. However, with Wallace sidelined due to a knee injury, Canada stepped up and has stood out with a league-leading 10.3 assists per game, 2.3 steals (third), 13.7 points, and 4.7 rebounds.
Looking ahead, Canada expressed her anticipation of transitioning to the two-spot when Wallace returns, stating, “When ‘Wally’ comes back I’ll be shifted over to the two, which is something that I’m actually looking forward to, not having the ball in my hands all the time and being able to focus on being more of a scorer rather than a playmaker.”
The Boomers’ next game is a home opener at the Boom Box, where they will face the winless Bendigo, with only 200 tickets left for the Sunday afternoon matchup.
* The Boomers have promoted guard Grace Graham to development player and they’ll go regional on November 26 when they head to Traralgon to face Canberra Capitals.
