MALAGA, Spain — Australia staged a remarkable comeback, turning the tables to secure a spot in the Davis Cup semifinals. The team came from behind to defeat the Czech Republic 2-1 and advance to the last four for the second consecutive year on Wednesday.

Alex De Minaur’s comeback from a set and a break down kept the Aussies alive, with Max Purcell and Matthew Ebden ultimately winning the decisive doubles match to set up an encounter with Finland on Friday.

Although Tomas Machac initially defeated Jordan Thompson in the first singles match to put the Czechs ahead, De Minaur’s victory over Jiri Lehecka and the subsequent win by Purcell and Ebden sealed the stunning comeback for Australia.

“I prided myself on a never-say-die attitude, and he’s certainly in the same category,” Australia captain Lleyton Hewitt said of De Minaur. “For him to go out there and put the boys on his back again, we’re so proud of him. He had to dig really deep and yet again he saved us.”

De Minaur, the top-ranked Australian and No. 12 in the world, displayed remarkable resilience, fighting back from behind to secure the crucial victory. “It’s part of my identity. I’m not going to give up. I’m going to fight until the end,” he said.

Australia’s win against the Czech Republic marked a significant milestone, as the team became only the second nation, after the United States, to reach 200 tie victories in the Davis Cup.

Looking ahead, Novak Djokovic’s Serbia will face a Great Britain team depleted by injuries in the upcoming quarterfinals, while Italy takes on the Netherlands. The second semifinal will be played on Saturday, with the final taking place on Sunday.
