Excitement fills the air as the Auburn basketball team, led by the renowned Bruce Pearl, gears up for the upcoming regular season.
In a mesmerizing display of skill, the Tigers showcased their talents by overwhelming Auburn University-Montgomery with a stunning 102-66 victory at the packed Neville Arena.
A noteworthy mention goes to the talented Denver Jones, a recent addition to the team from FIU, who emerged as the leading scorer for the Tigers, a role he is likely to excel in this season.
Impressively, Jones contributed 18 points in just 22 minutes of play, displaying exceptional efficiency with a shooting rate of 5-9 from the field and 4-8 from beyond the arc.
Previously, this junior guard averaged an impressive 20 points per game during his time at FIU.
Following closely behind in scoring were Chaney Johnson, a Division II transfer with 15 points, and Chad Baker-Mazara, a JUCO transfer with 14 points.
Under the helm of Bruce Pearl, Auburn has consistently relied on transfer players to deliver exceptional performance, and this season is no exception.
However, the game was not without setbacks as last season’s key scorer and defensive force, Johni Broome, suffered a shoulder injury just three minutes into the game.
Despite the injury, Broome remained on the bench with ice, and when questioned about the severity of the injury, Bruce Pearl appeared optimistic, stating that Broome experienced a “little pinch in his rotator cuff” and should recover without major issues.
Unfortunately, five-star recruit Aden Holloway was unable to participate due to an ankle injury sustained during a closed scrimmage against Furman. However, Pearl expressed confidence that Holloway would be back in action for the team’s opener against Baylor.
