We’re quickly approaching the crucial stage of the week at the ATP Antwerp Open, where an exciting end to the tournament is in store. Top seed Stefanos Tsitsipas aims to add to his lone title this year, while rising star Arthur Fils continues to make an impression. Will Maximilian Marterer fare better than his performance in Munich five years ago? As always, at LWOT, we offer our predictions for the semifinals in Antwerp, as well as the matches in Tokyo and Stockholm.
ATP Antwerp Semifinal Predictions
Alexander Bublik vs Maximilian Marterer
Head-to-head: Bublik 1-1 Marterer
Marterer has dominated his way to the semifinals in his debut campaign in Antwerp. He hasn’t dropped a set, with only Nuno Borges managing to break his serve. After a prolonged injury, the hard-hitting German appears to be making his way back into the top 50. His powerful serve will be a key weapon in his quest for the final in Antwerp.
Alexander Bublik is famously inconsistent, but when he’s in the zone, he’s virtually unstoppable. Despite arriving in Antwerp in the midst of a disappointing run of form with six consecutive losses, including an early exit at his home tournament in Astana, Bublik has managed to turn things around with his trademark brilliant tennis.
This match is bound to be closely contested, with two big servers vying to overpower each other. Alexander Bublik is the favored player to win for a reason. If he wants to win, he will.
Prediction: Bublik in 2
Stefanos Tsitsipas vs Arthur Fils
Head–to–head: First Meeting
Top seed and world #7, Tsitsipas seems to be enjoying his tennis in Tokyo, following his exit in Shanghai at the hands of Ugo Humbert. The Greek hasn’t dropped a set and has only lost his serve once. He displayed impressively fluid tennis in the quarterfinal against Yannick Haffman, suggesting a return of confidence heading into the semifinals. Tsitsipas enjoyed an incredible 13-match winning streak at the end of last year and the beginning of this year before losing to Novak Djokovic in the final of the Australian Open. Although he’s a long way from there at the moment, it’s been a promising week for him so far.
French teenager Arthur Fils has had a breakout season and is a player to watch in the future. Starting the season ranked outside the top 100, he has now established himself as a top 50 player with his scintillating performances. He demolished Juan Pablo Varillas in just over an hour in the quarterfinal, winning 6-0 6-3. Fils will present a challenge to Tsitsipas in this match.
Both players have claimed titles this year, but Tsitsipas is the more experienced and accomplished player at this stage of their careers. The Greek will be highly motivated to secure his place in Turin and should have enough to overcome Fils.
Prediction: Tsitsipas in 3
