Arsenal have urged Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) to address the standard of officiating in the Premier League following errors during their recent match against Newcastle United.
In a statement, Arsenal expressed their full support for manager Mikel Arteta’s post-match comments regarding the controversial decisions made by the referee and VAR. They described the award of Anthony Gordon’s winning goal as “an absolute disgrace” and criticized the lack of accountability.
The club stated, “We stand by Mikel Arteta’s remarks and highlight the exceptional efforts of our players and fans. The Premier League deserves better officiating, and PGMOL must take immediate action to improve the current standard and move away from retrospective analysis, explanations, and apologies. We commend Chief Refereeing Officer Howard Webb and offer our collaboration to achieve the world-class officiating our league demands.”
The Athletic has reached out to PGMOL for comment.

Explained: ‘A disgrace’ – Gordon’s controversial winner for Newcastle vs Arsenal
What occurred during the goal incident and VAR review?
Analysis by Omar Garrick
Gordon scored from close range to give Newcastle the lead, but VAR intervened. Initially, the focus was on whether the ball had gone out of play during the build-up. Joe Willock’s cross originated from Jacob Murphy’s cross-shot, near the corner flag.
VAR Andy Madley then examined a potential foul on Gabriel by Joelinton during their aerial challenge for Willock’s cross. The rebound fell to Gordon, who scored. VAR also assessed whether Gordon was in an offside position. Ultimately, the goal was awarded.
What else did Arteta say about the incident?
Arteta expressed his embarrassment and labeled the decision to allow Newcastle’s goal as “a disgrace.”
He went on to say, “We must discuss this result because it’s unbelievable that this goal stands. I feel embarrassed after more than 20 years in this country. This does not reflect the supposed status of the best league in the world. I apologize for the situation.”
When asked about a potential apology from PGMOL, Arteta responded, “I have to be here explaining that we have lost three points today. Do you understand the implications? It’s extremely difficult. This league means too much, and it’s embarrassing.”
