Angels Ink Charles Leblanc to Exciting Minor League Contract

The Los Angeles Angels have added some infield depth by signing 27-year-old Charles Leblanc to a minor league deal, as reported on the MLB.com transaction tracker. It is yet to be confirmed whether Leblanc’s deal includes an invite to the spring training roster.

Leblanc, originally a fourth-round pick by the Texas Rangers in 2016, spent six seasons in the Rangers’ minor league system before joining the Miami Marlins on a minor league deal in 2022. He quickly made his MLB debut with the Marlins, primarily playing second base and occasionally filling in at first and third base. In a limited bench role, Leblanc showcased his skills at the plate with a slash line of .263/.320/.404 in 169 plate appearances, earning a wRC+ of 104. However, his high strikeout rate and unusually high BABIP raised some concerns.

Following a stint with the Marlins, he remained in their organization for the 2023 season, excelling at the Triple-A level and earning a walk rate of 16.5%. After becoming a free agent, Leblanc has decided to join the Angels for the 2024 season.

With the potential departure of some key players, the Angels may have a role for Leblanc as a reliable non-roster infield option. This could be particularly important given the injury history of Anthony Rendon and the possible trade of Brandon Drury. As the Angels navigate the offseason, Leblanc could find himself back in the major leagues in Anaheim.
