The Giants are actively seeking roster upgrades this offseason, including at the third base position. San Francisco has expressed interest in free-agent third baseman Matt Chapman, as reported by MLB Network insider Jon Heyman last week. Chapman has been a standout player in a competitive free-agent market, however, his fit within the Giants is debatable.
Why it makes sense
Chapman’s connection to the Giants began after the team introduced new manager Bob Melvin. Having previously played for the Oakland Athletics under Melvin, the two have a history together. In an interview with KNBR, Melvin spoke highly of Chapman, praising his playing abilities and recognizing his potential contribution to the team.
Chapman, a five-time honoree in Gold Glove Award and a former MLB All-Star, would provide the Giants with a strong defensive and offensive upgrade. His robust statistics and elite fielding suggest a promising fit as the team’s third baseman.
Chapman defensively in 2023: 4 Outs Above Average, 12 Defensive Runs Saved (1,213.2 innings)
Davis defensively in 2023: 5 Outs Above Average, -11 Defensive Runs Saved (915.2 innings)
By securing Chapman, the Giants could significantly strengthen their lineup and defense for the seasons to come.
Why it doesn’t
Despite Chapman’s stellar performance, his career .240 batting average and high strikeout rate may raise concerns for the Giants. His offensive statistics in the 2023 season might not outshine the team’s existing options. Additionally, considering the projected cost of $16-25 million annually for Chapman’s contract, the Giants need to decide if this investment is worth it compared to the current salary of other available players.
It remains to be seen how the Giants view Chapman as a potential fit and if they would be willing to make such a significant investment when viable options are already in-house.
