The Jets Offense Continues to Struggle in Loss to Chargers
Justin Herbert Throws for Less Than 140 Yards, Austin Ekeler Struggles on the Ground
In a disappointing performance on Monday Night Football, the New York Jets’ offense failed to deliver once again. Despite a strong showing from their defense, the Jets lost to the Los Angeles Chargers 27-6, bringing their record to 4-4 for the season. The team’s offensive struggles have been a consistent problem for the past two years, and it seems that nothing has changed.
Running back Breece Hall expressed the need for the team to “grow up” and improve their offensive performance. The Jets have consistently brushed off their lackluster offense by blaming missed assignments, wrong routes, and penalties. However, it’s clear that these issues have not been resolved.
Despite having talented players like Garrett Wilson and Breece Hall, as well as improved offensive schemes under play caller Nathaniel Hackett, the Jets continue to disappoint. Their offense has been plagued by missed opportunities and a lack of production. The team’s statistics paint a grim picture, ranking near the bottom of the league in yards per game, passing yards, scoring, red zone efficiency, and third down conversion rate.
Quarterback Zach Wilson, who was expected to show improvement this season, has struggled immensely. He ranks last in EPA (expected points added) and has a lower QBR (quarterback rating) than his disastrous second season. Wilson’s performance on Monday night was particularly poor, losing two fumbles on strip sacks and holding the ball for an average of 3.76 seconds when pressured.
The Jets’ decision not to acquire a backup quarterback after Aaron Rodgers’ injury in Week 1 is beginning to backfire. With Wilson’s inconsistent performance and the lack of a reliable backup option, the team is struggling to find success on offense.
The Jets had an opportunity to make a statement in their game against the Chargers, but instead, they fell short. It’s clear that luck has played a part in their previous wins, with turnovers and special teams plays saving them in close games. The team’s defense has been strong, but without a complementary offense, they are unable to consistently win games.
Head coach Robert Saleh is not considering changing play callers at this time but acknowledges the need for adjustments. The offensive struggles are reminiscent of Hackett’s time with the Broncos last year, and it’s clear that something needs to change. Without improvements on offense, the Jets do not appear to be close to turning things around.
