After a memorable tennis season, Silverado players are thankful for each other and coaches

Thanksgiving is an excellent time to appreciate the year’s blessings and reflect on gratitude. Five members of the Silverado girls’ tennis team got together to discuss what they are thankful for this year as they prepared for the CIF-Southern Section Individual Sectionals.

Mailin Müller, Silverado’s top singles player, has a lot to be grateful for after spending this semester away from her family. Müller, a 16-year-old foreign exchange student from Germany, is attending Silverado for her senior year.

Returning home after Christmas, she is thrilled about the prospect of experiencing Thanksgiving for the first time. “I’m so thankful for my parents, making it possible for me to come here and getting to know a new great family,” says Müller. “I’m very thankful that I got a chance to meet really great people and make many new friendships.”

Her experience is further enriched by Silverado’s tennis team, where she has made many of these new friendships. After stumbling across the team, Müller emailed Silverado coach Bill Mocharnuk to hit some balls with the team and quickly joined them. She states, “I just think that I am better when I am on the court alone. I can concentrate better knowing I’m in control of everything.”

Mocharnuk describes her as “so nice, so sweet, but she’s a killer on the court.”

As Müller’s time at Silverado comes to an end, the article recognizes other key members of the team, Emalie Barajas, Valadez, McGowan and Notes, who have had a “fun and memorable tennis season.”

Barajas is thankful for “my coaches, my parents, and my team. If it wasn’t for them, there wouldn’t be motivation.” Valadez expresses gratitude for “our coaches, all my friends[, and] my entire team for how hard they worked all season long.” McGowan is thankful for “the opportunities that tennis has brought me so far,” and Notes says, “I’m thankful for my coaches and teammates.”
